PEOPLE
What gets you out of bed in the morning?
The dogs! Seriously, I often wake up at around 3 or 4am with answers to the previous day’s challenges and I write an email, which I try to hold off sending until a reasonable time but sometimes people receive it a little early.
What’s the best thing about working in healthcare comms?
How often do you get the opportunity to change the world? Healthcare is probably the most important subject to mankind and communications is the most powerful tool within it – in our own way, we can change the world.
What’s the worst thing about working in healthcare comms?
When people don’t recognise that this is their opportunity to change the world. Every time we get a drug used more effectively, make HCPs more aware of a disease via a campaign or improve the patient pathway, we get a chance to make a difference, but not everybody realises that.
What’s your favourite bar or eatery?
TÏNG at The Shard. Absolutely great food and fantastic views of London, one to check out if you haven’t already. I do go through phases though, so feel free to ask me again next month.
Which buzzwords/office jargon get on your nerves?
‘Work/life balance’ – I believe people should have a balance but those who talk about it want less work, those who don’t are the other way around and I really think that if you get it right, you don’t differentiate between the two.
Which book/film would you recommend above all others and why?
Pattern Recognition by William Gibson. Gibson was a visionary. It’s a thriller about patterns of behaviour and recognising them and trying to work out what they add up to and mean. He makes the subject fascinating.
Which person, living or dead, do you admire the most and why?
David Jones, as opposed to David Bowie. I admired him for not having the ego that portraying the character of David Bowie afforded him. Everyone who knew him personally said he was a gentleman, he put together the best musicians and producers and would often write the lyrics at the end to compliment their work.
Who is your healthcare comms hero/heroine?
Every member of my team at Page & Page and Partners on rotation.
What has been your career highlight to date?
Building my current team. It’s amazing to see people grow into bigger people and then watch them turn into giants.
What’s your golden rule/piece of advice for someone starting a career in healthcare comms?Open your eyes to what we’re doing and the differences we can make. Learn to be actively considerate – seeing things from another’s perspective, then doing something positive, adds value to the world.
